What Diversification Actually Protects You From

The core idea behind spreading risk across assets — and its limits.

Diversification reduces the impact of any single investment performing badly by spreading capital across assets that don't all move together for the same reasons.

It does not eliminate risk entirely — it primarily reduces unsystematic risk (risk specific to one company or sector). Market-wide (systematic) risk still affects a diversified portfolio during broad downturns.

Meaningful diversification usually means spreading exposure across asset classes, sectors, and geographies — simply holding many stocks in the same sector provides less protection than it appears to.
