What a P/E Ratio Does and Doesn't Tell You

One of the most-cited valuation metrics, and its common misuses.

The price-to-earnings ratio compares a company's share price to its per-share earnings, giving a rough sense of how much investors are paying for each dollar of current profit.

A high P/E can reflect genuine growth expectations, temporarily depressed earnings, or simple overvaluation — the ratio alone doesn't distinguish between these explanations.

P/E is most meaningful when compared against a company's own history, direct competitors, and its expected forward growth rate, rather than as an isolated absolute number.
