How 'Pig Butchering' Investment Scams Actually Operate
A pattern-based breakdown of a scam type that has cost victims significant losses globally.
This scam pattern typically begins with an unsolicited social or dating-app contact who builds a long-term relationship before introducing a supposedly lucrative trading platform.
Victims are often shown a convincing but entirely fake trading dashboard showing consistent profits, sometimes allowed to withdraw a small initial amount to build trust before being pressured into larger deposits.
The platform itself is typically fraudulent infrastructure controlled by the scammer, not a real exchange or broker — losses often become apparent only when withdrawal requests are refused or additional 'fees' are demanded.
Independently verifying any trading platform's legitimacy — outside of anything the contact provides — before depositing funds is the most effective defense against this pattern.
